1942년, 폴란드 병사들이 이란인 소년에게서 부모를 잃은 아기곰 한마리를 입양해오게 되었다. 이 아기곰에게 보이텍(Wojtek)이라는 이름을 지어주고, 빈 보드카병에 우유를 담아 먹이거나 과일, 꿀, 시럽, 마멀레이드를 먹이며 막사에서 키웠다.

군인들 밑에서 자란 보이텍은 사람의 습성을 그대로 따라했다. 직접 샤워기를 틀고 목욕하거나 군인처럼 술과 담배도 즐겼다고한다.

보이텍은 위험에 빠진 군인을 구하거나, 무거운 물건을 날라주는 등 군인을 돕는 행동으로 명예병사라는 칭호를 부여받았다.
또 보이텍은 2차 세계대전에서 가장 치열한 전쟁 중 하나로 꼽히는 몬테카시노 전투에 참전해 군수물자 수송 임무를 완수하기도 했다.

전쟁이 끝이나고 부대가 해산하여 갈곳이 없어진 보이텍은 에든버러 동물원에 살게 되었다. 갑자기 모두와 헤어지게된 떨어진 보이텍은 매우 슬퍼했다고한다.

보이텍의 전우들은 종종 동물원으로 찾아왔는데 영어만 들리던 환경에서 폴란드어로 보이텍을 부르는 사람이 나타나면 매우 신나하는 기색을 보였다고한다.

보이텍은 1963년 22세의 나이로 자연사했고 사망당시 몸무게는 500파운드(약 227kg) 키는 6피트(약 183cm)였다고한다.
