야광충은 반딧불이와 같이 루시페린을 통한 생체발광을 한다.
한국어로는 이 야광충에 의한 반짝이는 바다빛을 뜻하는 표현이 따로 없지만, 영어로는 Sea sparkle 혹은 Mareel이라고도 알려져 있다.
가끔 야광충이 대규모로 발광하여 인공위성에서도 확인될 만큼 넓은 규모로 빛이 발생하는 경우가 있는데, 이를 Milky Sea Effect라고 부른다.
야광충은 물리적인 자극을 받으면 빛을 낸다.
그렇기에 항상 파도가 치고 있는 해안가에 야광충이 번성한 경우 마법 같은 광경을 만들어낸다.
사람이 첨벙거리거나 돌을 던져도 당연히 빛이 난다.
