카라쿠리 인형의 역사는 1511년 스페인 왕실에서 도쿠가와 이에야스에게 선물한 시계에서 출발한다. 태엽으로 수많은 톱니바퀴가 정교하게 움직이는 기계에 감탄한 일본 막부는 장인들에게 시계를 복제하도록 주문했다. 서양의 첨단기술을 처음 접한 장인들은 태엽을 만들 수 있는 제강기술이 없어 고래수염에 아교를 발라 태엽을 대신하는 등 각고의 노력을 기울여 복제 시계를 만드는 데 성공했다. 이렇게 쌓인 장인의 기술이 전통인형과 합쳐져 다양한 카라쿠리 인형이 만들어졌다.
