Generation Z shines brightly. Its shadow runs deep.

 

“Not So Different (Film)” draws from documented realities lived by young people within that shadow, giving cinematic form to AI’s song “Not So Different.” In 2026, civilization has democratized entertainment, and generative AI can conjure virtually any world. We came to understand what we had to do: film within reality itself, in the dangerous heat of the desert.

 

Modern content industries trace important roots to Europe, while the United States drove their extraordinary expansion. Now, music born in Japan crosses the Pacific to America and casts light into the shadows surrounding its young people. Japan’s music industry, cultural leaders, entrepreneurs, and artists have gathered across disciplines to carry this work forward. Here, the spirit of the “Republic of Letters” — culture carried across borders through human connection — finds renewed purpose.

 

Across its history, the Recording Academy has upheld respect for those who create, and for the conviction that creation demands. As civilization enters a profound phase transition, we answer that legacy from Japan through the work itself.
