In March 2023, Jimin released his debut solo project, “FACE,” making history as the first Korean solo artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 with his single “Like Crazy.” This EP was a deep dive into Jimin’s personal journey and artistic evolution, featuring a sophisticated blend of orchestral grandeur and dynamic choreography that showcased his passionate voice. “MUSE” builds upon this foundation, exploring themes of love and self-discovery through its seven tracks. The album tells a compelling story of reimagined love, fleeting confidence, and a path that leads from being lost to finding oneself. The album opens with “Rebirth (Intro),” where radiant high notes shimmer over a rhythmic heartbeat, capturing the thrill of new love. Jimin’s lyrics reflect his desire to get closer to his special someone, making each move feel intentional and heartfelt.

Next, “Interlude: Showtime” presents an instrumental piece that reflects Jimin’s dynamic and rhythmic performance style. His welcoming of “today’s show” smoothly transitions into the pre-release track “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band (SGMB).” The music video, subtly inspired by The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” blends lively and mellow tones, combining vibrancy with introspection. In “SGMB,” Jimin’s yearning for connection continues, while “Slow Dance” features a duet with Sofia Carson, their voices blending in a sultry and melodic performance that sets a romantic ambiance. “Be Mine” introduces a confident, Afrobeats-infused rhythm, with Jimin metaphorically dancing under the moonlight. The lead single “Who” brings a poignant sense of longing, with Jimin on an urgent quest to find his soulmate.

The album wraps up with “Closer Than This,” a sweet message to his fans released shortly after his enlistment in December 2023. Even though he’s not physically there, Jimin’s promise to come back soon hits home with his fans. Although Jimin is not here to reinvent the wheel, “MUSE” understands the value of keeping a fanbase well fed and satisfied. As Minseong Kim, his performance director, puts it, “Jimin’s versatility and commitment have shaped his unique style, making his performances some of the most exciting in pop music right now.”  Whereas “FACE” explored darker themes, “MUSE” embraces a spirit of joy and love, keeping fans engaged and entertaining for that much longer.

V MAGAZINE: Jimin is well known for his formidable performance skills. From his debut solo album FACE to the second solo album MUSE, he seems to deliver one of the most exciting performances in pop music right now. What do you think makes Jimin an iconic performer?

Minseong Kim: Jimin has familiarized himself with contemporary and street dance from a very early age. His tireless hard work in these facets of dance gained him the title of an all-rounder with an impressively wide performance spectrum and versatility. I think one of the elements that makes Jimin a top-notch performer is his rich expressions. When we were working together, I saw Jimin putting a lot of thought into delivering the song’s choreography as a visual art form. He uses his detailed expressions to convey various artistic elements in the performance beyond simply presenting stylish, energetic choreography. He is always devoted to emphasizing the artistic elements of the performance by forming a visceral connection to it. I believe that his commitment and passion has shaped Jimin’s unique style and allows him to deliver one of the most exciting performances in pop music.

V MAGAZINE: From the lively, upbeat performance of pre-release track “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band (feat. Loco)” to that of the main track “Who,” which showcases both Jimin’s softness and strength, this album seems to deliver performances that capture all of Jimin’s unique qualities. What was it like to work with Jimin on the performances for “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band (feat. Loco)” and “Who”? What were the aspects that Jimin considered the most important in the performances for both songs?

Minseong Kim: While promoting FACE, I remember Jimin playing for me the songs that he was working on at the time. Although he was busy promoting the album, you could see it in his eyes how much affection and enthusiasm he had for them. There was so much he wanted to do with those songs and expressed eagerness to show his fans what now became the MUSE album. Once we started wrapping things up for FACE, we began working on the new project together.

 

With the performance for the main track “Who,” we mainly focused on showcasing a more charismatic, masculine side of Jimin, which entirely contrasts from the performances for FACE. We had countless discussions about how to visually articulate the story and message of the song through the performance on a larger scale, in a manner that’s true to the song’s title “Who.” When the choreography was completed, Jimin was utterly pleased with the performance having all the elements he had wished to incorporate. While he was learning the choreography, he would practice the parts where he felt were lacking or unsatisfactory at home and watch videos of his rehearsals over 1,000 times. His meticulousness and dedication surprised us all. That’s just a snippet of how much love and labor he put into the album.

 

wanted to express the feeling of joy that he was feeling at that moment. It was important to him that he incorporated into the performance the elements he felt his fans would love. As the song talks about ‘the truth untold,’ the performance was crafted to convey an image of Jimin confessing on behalf of those unable to express their feelings in a manner that unfolds like a musical production. We crafted the choreography in the style that would capture Jimin’s soft charms as much as possible. From the dance practice all the way to filming the track video, the entire process was pure joy.

 

김민성: 페이스 홍보를 하면서 지민이가 당시 작업 중이던 곡들을 연주해줬던 기억이 납니다. 앨범 홍보로 바쁜 와중에도 그 곡들에 대한 애정과 열정이 얼마나 컸는지 눈빛에서 느낄 수 있었어요. 그는 그 곡들로 하고 싶은 일이 너무 많았고, 팬들에게 지금의 뮤즈 앨범을 보여주고 싶다는 열망을 표현했습니다. FACE의 작업을 마무리한 후, 우리는 함께 새 프로젝트 작업을 시작했습니다.

 

메인 트랙 'Who'의 퍼포먼스는 'FACE'의 퍼포먼스와는 완전히 대조되는 지민의 카리스마 넘치는 남성적인 모습을 보여주는 데 중점을 뒀습니다. 곡의 제목인 'Who'에 걸맞게 어떻게 하면 더 큰 스케일의 퍼포먼스를 통해 곡의 스토리와 메시지를 시각적으로 표현할 수 있을지 수없이 많은 논의를 거쳤습니다. 안무가 완성되자 지민은 자신이 담고자 했던 모든 요소가 담긴 퍼포먼스에 매우 만족해했습니다. 그는 안무를 배우는 동안 집에서 부족하거나 불만족스러운 부분을 연습하고 리허설 영상을 1,000회 이상 시청했습니다. 그의 꼼꼼함과 헌신은 우리 모두를 놀라게 했습니다. 이는 그가 앨범에 얼마나 많은 애정과 노력을 기울였는지 보여주는 단편적인 예일 뿐입니다.

V MAGAZINE: Jimin participated in producing six of the seven tracks in MUSE. What was it like to work with Jimin overall on the album? Were there any differences in the way that you and Jimin collaborated on this album compared to his previous solo debut album FACE?

 

V 매거진: 지민은 뮤즈에 수록된 7개 트랙 중 6개 트랙의 프로듀싱에 참여했습니다. 앨범 전반적으로 지민과 함께 작업하는 것은 어땠나요? 이번 앨범에서 지민과 협업하는 방식이 이전 솔로 데뷔 앨범 'FACE'와 비교해 달라진 점이 있었나요?

 

 

 

Pdogg: There wasn’t a major difference in the way we worked on the albums. That’s largely because we began working on this album while we were all in LA for a choir session during the production of FACE. However, Jimin went into working on MUSE with a significantly different mindset. During the production of FACE, he was emotionally struggling due to the pandemic. By the time we started on MUSE, he had already resolved some of those emotional struggles through FACE. Also, just being surrounded by the laid-back, chill vibe of LA allowed us to begin producing the feel-good songs. I also believe the experience of collaborating with various producers and songwriters in LA and NY gave Jimin the opportunity to further explore his limitless potential.

 

Pdogg: 앨범 작업 방식에는 큰 차이가 없었습니다. 그도 그럴 것이 FACE 앨범을 제작할 때 합창단 세션을 위해 모두 LA에 있는 동안 이 앨범 작업을 시작했기 때문이죠. 하지만 지민은 상당히 다른 마음가짐으로 MUSE 작업에 임했습니다.FACE를 제작하는 동안 그는 팬데믹으로 인해 감정적으로 힘들었습니다. MUSE 작업을 시작할 무렵에는 이미 FACE를 통해 감정적인 어려움을 어느 정도 해결한 상태였습니다. 또한 LA의 여유롭고 차분한 분위기에 둘러싸여 있는 것만으로도 기분 좋은 곡을 만들 수 있었죠. 또한 LA와 뉴욕에서 다양한 프로듀서, 작곡가들과 협업한 경험은 지민이 자신의 무한한 가능성을 더욱 탐구할 수 있는 기회가 되었다고 생각해요.

 

 

V MAGAZINE: From the global success of FACE to the upcoming release of MUSE, Jimin seems to be solidifying his distinctive musical style as a solo artist. What were some key elements of the album that Jimin and the producers focused on during the making of MUSE?

 

V 매거진: 'FACE'의 글로벌 성공에 이어 곧 발매될 'MUSE'까지, 지민은 솔로 아티스트로서 자신만의 음악 스타일을 확고히 다지고 있는 것 같습니다. MUSE를 만들면서 지민과 프로듀서들이 중점을 둔 앨범의 핵심 요소는 무엇인가요?

 

 

 

Pdogg: While the previous album overall focused on darker emotions, the new album focuses on capturing Jimin’s lively, joyful emotions in the music. Since this album took off loosely inspired by The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, we aimed to approach the lyrics in a more conceptual manner. As for “Who,” we focused on delivering Jimin’s emotional state in the most organic way. In terms of the sound, we tried to showcase a wide spectrum of genres ranging from 2000s hip-hop to R&B and afrobeats. If you listen to the album, you’d be able to hear how Jimin is continuing to expand his musical palette.

 

Pdogg: 이전 앨범이 전반적으로 어두운 감정에 집중했다면, 새 앨범은 지민의 활기차고 즐거운 감정을 음악에 담아내는 데 중점을 뒀습니다. 이번 앨범은 비틀즈의 '캡틴 페퍼의 론리 하츠 클럽 밴드'에서 영감을 받아 좀 더 개념적인 방식으로 가사에 접근하고자 했어요. 'Who'는 지민의 감정 상태를 가장 유기적으로 전달하는 데 집중했습니다. 사운드 측면에서는 2000년대 힙합부터 알앤비, 아프로비트까지 다양한 장르를 선보이려고 노력했습니다. 앨범을 들어보면 지민이 음악적 스펙트럼을 계속 넓혀가고 있다는 것을 느낄 수 있을 거예요.

 

 

V MAGAZINE: MUSE experiments with a wider range of sounds following the previous album. Among those tracks, the main track “Who” is a R&B, hip-hop track, reminiscent of the sound that dominated the 2000s. Can you tell us about how the collaboration and the recording session with Jimin went?

 

V 매거진: 뮤즈는 이전 앨범에 이어 더욱 폭넓은 사운드를 실험합니다. 그중에서도 메인 트랙 'Who'는 2000년대를 풍미했던 사운드를 연상시키는 R&B, 힙합 트랙입니다. 지민과의 콜라보레이션과 녹음 작업은 어떻게 진행되었는지 소개해 주시겠어요?

 

 

 

GHSTLOOP: Producer Pdogg worked on the initial version of “Who”, and it was further developed in collaboration with Jon Bellion’s team in New York last year. In the meetings we held before and during the production process with Jimin on his second album, he expressed a desire to convey more uplifting themes in comparison to FACE. Ultimately, he came up with the key question “Where is my true love?” This led us to create “Who” with the early 2000s pop vibes that is also suitable for an unconventional performance. Jimin was pleased with the way the song turned out and carefully considered how to deliver its message. He needed to convey the emotional changes of the song through the variation in his vocal tone, and to achieve this, he worked diligently on strengthening his vocal techniques and delivery. He pushed himself to the point of putting a strain on his vocal cords from numerous recording sessions, and this, combined with Pdogg’s direction, enabled us to achieve outstanding results. When I saw the entire performance of “Who” with the final mix, I thought to myself, ‘This is it.’ I personally feel very attached to the song.

 

GHSTLOOP: 프로듀서 피독이 'Who'의 초기 버전을 작업했고, 작년에 뉴욕의 존 벨리온 팀과 협업해 더욱 발전시켰습니다. 지민과 2집 앨범을 제작하기 전과 제작 과정에서 진행한 미팅에서 그는 FACE에 비해 좀 더 고양된 주제를 전달하고 싶다는 의사를 밝혔습니다. 결국 그는 "나의 진정한 사랑은 어디에 있을까?"라는 핵심 질문을 떠올렸습니다. 그 결과 2000년대 초반의 팝적인 분위기로 파격적인 퍼포먼스에 어울리는 'Who'를 만들 수 있었습니다. 지민은 곡의 결과물에 만족하며 메시지를 어떻게 전달할지 신중하게 고민했습니다. 그는 보컬 톤의 변화를 통해 곡의 감정 변화를 전달해야 했고, 이를 위해 보컬 테크닉과 전달력을 강화하기 위해 부단히 노력했습니다. 수많은 녹음 세션으로 성대에 무리가 갈 정도로 스스로를 몰아붙였고, 이러한 노력과 피독의 디렉팅이 더해져 뛰어난 결과물을 얻을 수 있었습니다. 최종 믹스와 함께 "Who"의 전체 퍼포먼스를 봤을 때 '바로 이거다'라는 생각이 들었습니다. 개인적으로 이 곡에 큰 애착을 느낍니다.

 

 

 

V MAGAZINE: Jimin is a multifaceted artist with unique vocals and top-notch performance skills. How did you try to capture Jimin’s distinctive musical colors as a solo artist in this album?

 

V 매거진: 지민은 개성 있는 보컬과 최고 수준의 퍼포먼스 실력을 갖춘 다재다능한 아티스트입니다. 이번 앨범에서 솔로 아티스트로서 지민의 독특한 음악적 색깔을 어떻게 담아내려고 노력했나요?

 

 

 

GHSTLOOP: Similar to FACE, one of our main focuses for Jimin’s second solo project was to show a new side of him.We weren’t trying to completely depart from Jimin’s previous work, but rather aimed to show his distinctive character while focusing on the more mature side of him. Thus, we wanted to fill the album with songs that hold weight and are true to his artistry. In my earlier response, I mentioned the emotional changes in Jimin’s tone, and I believe these were expressed very well in each song of the album. Of course, songs like “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band” and “Closer Than This” are more on the bright side and in line with Jimin’s character that we already know, but how he expresses his maturity and artistry within that brightness made a difference. While we aimed to showcase a new side of Jimin, the most important aspect was to create an album that feels true to Jimin. Jimin is essentially an artist with great versatility, and this allowed him to take on many different challenges for this album. As a result, we were able to create MUSE that rightfully captures his unique artistry and charm.

 

GHSTLOOP: 지민의 두 번째 솔로 프로젝트도 FACE와 마찬가지로 지민의 새로운 모습을 보여드리는 데 중점을 뒀는데요, 전작에서 완전히 벗어나기보다는 지민만의 개성을 보여주면서 좀 더 성숙한 모습에 집중하고자 했어요. 그래서 무게감이 있으면서도 지민의 예술성에 충실한 곡들로 앨범을 채우고 싶었습니다. 앞서 답변에서 지민의 감정 변화에 대해 언급했는데, 앨범의 각 곡에서 이러한 감정 변화가 잘 표현되었다고 생각합니다. 물론 '스메랄도 가든 마칭밴드'나 '이보다 더 가까이' 같은 곡은 밝은 편이고 우리가 이미 알고 있는 지민의 캐릭터에 더 부합하지만, 그 밝음 속에서 성숙함과 예술성을 어떻게 표현하느냐가 차이를 만들었죠. 지민의 새로운 모습을 보여주고자 했지만, 가장 중요하게 생각한 것은 지민에게 진정성이 느껴지는 앨범을 만드는 것이었습니다. 지민은 기본적으로 다재다능한 아티스트이기 때문에 이번 앨범을 위해 다양한 도전을 할 수 있었습니다. 그 결과 지민 특유의 예술성과 매력을 제대로 담아낸 뮤즈를 만들 수 있었죠.
