Urgent:Racist Skit on SNL Korea
To Whom It May Concern at NBC SNL,
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent skit aired on Coupang Play's version of SNL,
which featured a racially insensitive portrayal of a K-Pop star Hanni of NewJeans.
The skit mocked her accent, which was both offensive and disappointing to see in a program linked to the origianl SNL, a show that claims to promote diversity and inclusion.
By selling the tights to international adaptations of SNL, there is a responsibility to ensure that these versions uphold the same ethical standards and values that the origianl show represents.
Unfortunately, this recent skit does not reflect those values. Instead, it perpetuates harmful stereotypes and promotes racist humor, which is unacceptable in any context. Moreover, such content risks tarnishing the long-standing history and brand value of SNL.
The mockery and parody of Hanni go beyond mere offense; they obscure and overshadow the essence of what she stands for and what she aims to communicate. Hanni, who is of Vietnamese-Australian descent, may not be fully accustomed to the Korean language, making the ridicule of her accent particularly damaging. This not only disrespects her as an individual but also undermines the broader messages she represnets.
Additionally, Coupang Play's SNL has a troubling history of airing skits that mock women of Vietnamese descent, including past instances of racially insensitive content. Hanni recently testified in the South Korea National Assembly's audit regarding workplace bullying within HYBE Corporation. SNL Korea's skit, mocking her actions and accent, is a blatant disregard for her bravery in speaking out against such serious issues.
I urge NBC and the SNL team to address this issue by imposing appropriate sanctions on Coupang Play's version of SNL. This could include revoking thier licensing rights or officially denouncing the actions of SNL Korea. Taking such steps would demonstrate a clear commitment to maintaining the integrity and values of the SNL brand globally.
To provide context, international media such as the BBC and Billboard have reported on the scrutiny faced by NewJeans and Hanni in light of recent events. These articles highlight the seriousness of the situation and the global attention it has garnered:

This is a cirtical moment for SNL to stand by its commitment to diversity and inclusion, and I hope you will take the necessary steps to rectify this situation.
Sincerely,
