TIME: “대취타” 같은 곡에는 판소리 스토리텔링과 꽹과리 퍼커션을 사용하여 표현한 한국 전통이 가사와 음악에 녹아 있다. 너의 음악에 한국의 음악적 영향을 계속해서 포함시키는 게 왜 중요한가?

윤기: “대취타”의 테마는 이 트랙 작업을 시작하면서부터 내 머릿 속에 있었다. 그래서 실제 “대취타”의 소리를 샘플링했다. 처음 든 생각은 왕의 행진에서 실제로 연주되는 음악을 샘플링하고 싶다는 것이었다. 그래서 자연스럽게 한국적 요소가 이 트랙과 뮤직비디오의 핵심 요소가 된 것이다.

TIME: 올해에 넓은 범위의 아티스트들과 콜라보 작업을 했다. 할시 앨범에 등장했고, 아이유와 새 싱글을 발매했고, 이번에는 Max, NiiHWa, 김종완, RM의 목소리를 너의 프로젝트에 불러들였다. 콜라보 작업을 성공으로 이끄는 것은 무엇인가?

윤기: 내 음악에 대해 모든 사람들이 좋은 말을 해줬다는 게 감사하다. 특히 넬의 김종완은 내 2016 첫 믹스테잎을 즐겨들었다고 해줘서 감사했다. 내 작업 철학은 “좋은 게 좋은 거다”라는 것이기 때문에 나는 각 개인의 기준에 맞춰가는 걸 꽤 잘하는 것 같다.

TIME: 솔로 래퍼로서의 Agust D와 방탄소년단의 멤버로서의 슈가는 어떤 점에서 다른가? 어떤 점이 같은가?

윤기: 차이점은 Agust D로서 더 많은 것을 솔직하게 표현할 수 있고, 더 날 것의 내 모습을 보여줄 수 있다는 것이다. 비슷한 점은 Agust D와 슈가 둘 다 꿈과 희망에 대해 노래한다는 것이다.

TIME: “Strange”에서는 사회의 특정 측면에 대한 걱정을 표현하고 다른 의견을 갖는 데에서 오는 외로움을 표현하고 있다. 당신 같은 공인이 기존의 규범에 대한 의견을 제시하고 우리가 어떻게 살아야 하는지에 대한 질문을 던지는 게 중요하다고 생각하는가?

윤기: 나는 그냥 물음표를 던진다. 결정은 개인이 하는 것이다. 내 개인적인 의견으로는 타인에게 영향력이 있는 사람들은 자신의 편향적인 관점을 크게 표현하는 것에 대한 조심성을 갖는 게 때론 더 낫다고 생각한다.

TIME: 트랩, 힙합, 락, 팝, 알앤비가 이 믹스테잎에 등장하고 같은 곡에 나타나기도 한다. 이렇게 스타일을 섞는 게 방탄소년단의 시그니처이고 첫 믹스테잎에도 나타났다. 이는 전세계 팝 시장에서도 일반적인 것으로 자리잡게 되었다. 프로듀서로서 이 믹스테잎에서 새로운 것을 시도하기 위해서 어떤 시도를 했는가?

윤기: 새로운 것을 시도하는 것에 집중하기보다 내가 만들고 싶었던 음악을 만들었다. 난 장르나 장르 간의 크로스오버에 그렇게 까탈스럽지 않다. 좋은 게 좋은 거고, 판단은 리스너에게 달려 있다. 난 내가 하고 싶은 걸 할 뿐이다.

TIME: 이 프로젝트, 곡 작업을 한 경험, 그리고 예상치 못한 올 봄의 변화들에 대처하고 있는 방법에 대해 리스너들이 알았으면 하는 것이 있는가?

TIME: You’ve now spent seven years as part of BTS, and your last solo mixtape came out back in 2016. Time, change, and growth are on your mind in this mixtape, particularly in the first track “Moonlight.” As you reflect over the past few years, what’s changed to you?

MIN: My life is the same. My ways of work and day-to-day patterns haven’t changed much. Perhaps my position within the music industry? From a musician’s perspective, a change could be that I’ve had pretty decent outcome with BTS albums or with other external works. Personally, I have become more mature compared to 2016.

TIME: Songs like “Daechwita” include Korean traditions both in lyrics and in musical form, using pansori storytelling and Kkwaenggwari percussion. Why is it important to you to continue to include Korean musical influences in your music?

MIN: The theme “Daechwita” was already on my mind when I first started working on this track, so I sampled the sound of a real “Daechwita.” The first thought I had was that I wanted to sample the music that is played during the ceremonial walk of the King, so naturally, Korean elements ended up being an essential component to the track as well as the music video.

TIME: You’ve collaborated with a wide range of artists this year, appearing on Halsey’s album, putting out a new single with IU, and now bringing in voices like MAX, NiiHWa, Kim Jong-wan and RM for your own project. What makes a collaboration work successfully for you?

MIN: I’m grateful that everybody had good things to say about my music, especially Kim Jong-wan of NELL who told me he enjoyed listening to my first mixtape from 2016. My work philosophy is “what’s good is good,” so I think I’m pretty good at leveling with each individual’s standards.

TIME: What’s the difference between Agust D the solo rapper and Suga the BTS member? What remains the same?

MIN: The difference is that there is a lot more that I can openly express and that I can show a more raw side to myself [with Agust D]. What’s similar is that both sing of dreams and hope.

TIME: On “Strange,” you express concerns about certain aspects of society, and the loneliness that can come from having a different opinion. Do you think it’s important for public figures like you to challenge norms and raise questions about how we live?

MIN: I just throw the question mark; it’s up to each individual to decide. In my personal opinion, it’s often better for those who have such influence on others to be wary of loudly voicing their biased views.

TIME: Trap, hip-hop, rock, pop and R&B all appear on this mixtape, often in the same songs. This mixing of styles is a signature of BTS, and was present on your first mixtape as well. It’s also become normal across the global pop landscape. As a producer, how have you tried to innovate or try something new on this mixtape?

MIN: It’s more that I made the music I wanted to make, rather than fixating on attempting something new. I’m not too picky on genre or crossovers between them. What’s good is good, and it’s up to the listeners to judge. I just do what I want to do.

TIME: Is there anything else you’d like listeners to know about this project, your experience creating it, and how you’re managing with the unexpected changes of this spring?

MIN: It’s good to know that it’s fine when things go in an unintended direction, because you can always start over again. Keep calm, take the next-best option and move forward.
